Obituary

With heartfelt sorrow, we announce the passing of Tommy Frank McDonald on June 22, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas, at the age of 76.  A visitation will be held on Monday, June 30, 2025, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Bartley Memorial Chapel.  A funeral service will be held on July 1, 2025, at 11:oo AM at Bartley Memorial Chapel.  Burial will follow at Plainview Cemetery. Arrangements are under the supervision of Bartley Funeral Home.

Tommy was born on May 26, 1949, in Plainview, Texas, to Thomas Milton and Mayzelle (Chandler)  McDonald. On January 2, 1970, he married the love of his life, Sue McMickings in Plainview. They were married for 51 years until her passing in 2021. Together, they had two wonderful boys and always prioritized family; they were the greatest parents in the world. They set an example for parenting that the boys are now teaching their own sons. His life revolved around family, enjoying gatherings at people's homes and eating out. His greatest love was for Sue.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was a proud veteran. One of his many roles was as a Control Tower Operator in the Range Division at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he ensured the safety of artillery operations by overseeing range facilities. He also served in the Vietnam War.

He was a Big, Gentle Giant—rough on the outside but as soft as jelly on the inside. He was a friend to everyone, whether he knew them or not; if you called him, he would be there. Outside of the Army, he was an elevator constructor, working on construction sites, which is now three generations strong in elevator construction. He was also a member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC).

Those left to cherish his memory is his sons, John McDonald and wife, Kelly, of Lubbock, Texas, and Cory Richard McDonald of Wolfforth, Texas; two grandchildren, Brittani McDonald and Austin McDonald and wife, Julie;  four great grandchildren, Kendell Cole, Ryliegh Sue, John Wayne, and Hallie Blake.  Tommy was blessed with many dear friends who will miss him greatly.

He is preceded by his beloved wife, Sue McDonald; his parents, Thomas Milton and Mayzelle McDonald.
