James Thomas
Petty
December 12, 1946 – November 7, 2021
James Thomas Petty, 74, of Lubbock, put on his shoes and went to work at the auto parts store in heaven on November 7, 2021, after a battle with Parkinson's. Graveside services will be held on Friday, November 12, 2021, at Terrace Cemetery in Post, Texas at 2 p.m. A visitation and rosary will be held Thursday, November 11, 2021, from 6-8 p.m. at Bartley Funeral Home in Plainview, Texas.
James was born on December 12, 1946, to William Jackson and Nelda Marie (Qualls) Petty in Brownfield, Texas. He was raised in Levelland with his sister, Carolyn, and graduated in 1966 from Levelland High School. He attended Texas Tech University where he studied geology. During this time, he met the love of his life, Beverly Jan Johnson. They were married on September 14, 1970, in Lubbock, Texas. They shared 51 beautiful years together.
James was a hardworking man who dedicated his life to providing for his family. Working for Barrett's Automotive, Auto Pro, and finally AutoZone up until his health aliments no longer allowed him to do so. He enjoyed collecting rocks and coins, his collection is immense and very impressive. It has left an enormous impression on his family and will be passed down through generations. James also was very knowledgeable about his genealogy and could go into great detail. You could sit and listen to him for hours about who and where he came from.
Above all the auto parts and hobbies, James loved and cherished his family. His greatest loves. His wife, children, and of course grandchildren who lovingly refer to him as "Papa". He never missed a chance to show them that he cared whether it be by aggravating and messing with them or just showing them love. James had a way about him that made you feel that you've known him your whole life even if you had just met him. He never met a stranger. He never strayed from the truth and always told you how it was whether you liked it or not. A very honest man. Every word he spoke you listened to; he had a profound way about him. He gave the best advice.
James will be remembered as a truly amazing husband, father, Papa, uncle, and dear friend. He will be greatly missed and a void will remain until we see him again on that glorious day.
Those left to hold on to his precious memory is his wife; Beverly Petty of Lubbock, Texas, his children; Priscilla Washington and husband, Darrell, of Lubbock, Texas, and John Petty and wife, Kaylee, of Plainview, Texas, six grandchildren; Mia Adilene Lewis, Keelen Christopher Lewis, Devin Ray Petty, Chloe Skye Petty, Geraldine Lynn Kurtz, and Abigail May Petty, a nephew; Chris Mack.
James is preceded in death by his parents William Jackson Petty and Nelda Marie (Qualls) Petty, his son; James Ray "Jimm" Petty, and his sister; Carolyn Mack.
The family asks that all donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
