Ernestine Barnes, 79, went to be with her loving father on October 3, 2023. Wake Services for Ernestine will be held at 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 6th, 2023, at Bartley Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Plainview. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, October 7, 2023, at First Baptist Church, Hale Center, with Pastor W. R. Bolton officiating followed by interment at Hale Center Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Bartley Funeral Home of Plainview.
Ernestine was born on September 14,1944 in Temple Texas to Ernest Rogers and Carrie Carter-Thornton.
She enjoyed quilting, collecting angels, roosters and she loved her family dearly. She worked for Levi Strauss and the Country Club in Plainview. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Abernathy, Texas, where she sang in the choir and participated on the Usher Board.
Mrs. Ernestine's, life and memories are survived, cherished, and loved by her husband Elisha Barnes for 35 years. Her five sons, Willet (Christeen) Smith of Lubbock Texas, Eddie III (Alisa) Smith of Oklahoma, Ernest (Tracey) Smith of Seatle, Washington, Curtis Lee Smith of Plainview, Texas and Henry Wayne Smith of Hale Center, Texas, her one daughter, Cassandra Smith-Barlow of Dallas Texas, her stepdaughter, Sheila Glover, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and family. Mrs. Ernestine was blessed with 18 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and one Uncle Walter Carter (92years old)
Mrs. Ernestine is preceded in death by her father, Ernest Rogers, her mother Carrie Carter- Thornton, three of her kids, Author Wayne Smith, Pauline Smith, Ennis Smith. Six brothers; Willie Charles Thornton, Essie Lee Thornton, James Thornton, Clinton Thornton, Clifford Thornton, Limus Thornton, two sisters, Bessie Jones and Brenda Cherry

My mom was our hero but my brother, Curtis, you were her hero. You never left her side and continued to believe that she was going to get better. Curtis, you were so patient with her, taking care of her and making sure she had everything she needed every day. May God bless your heart. You're an angel who did everything in your power to care for our mom and make her believe she can make it. Please accept our gratitude for all that you have done for our mom.
