Edith P. Boatright, also known as Grandy to her family and friends, passed away at the age of 99 on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011. Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday at First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Ron Warren officiating. A graveside will be held at 4:00 P.M. Thursday at Lawnview Cemetery in Cordell, Okla., under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home. A visitation will be held 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. She was born in Cordell, Okla., where she went to school and worked as a co-owner with her husband, Roy D. Boatright, of Boatright's Sayre Drug Store in Sayre, Okla. She and her family moved to Plainview in 1949 and were very active in the First Baptist Church. Edith helped orgainize many of the existing departments and served as both a teacher and active student in the adult Sunday school class. She also was a proud supporter of Wayland Baptist University and welcomed many students from the university into her home if they needed a place to stay and always provided a home cooked meal as part of the visit. In addition, she was a salesperson at Dorothy's Ladies Apparel from 1955-1975 and at Marse & Son from 1976-1980. Through these jobs she met many in the community who shopped there. Edith led a full life and spent much of her time devoted to the church and community, always being involved where she could. She also enjoyed spending time in Colorado in the beautiful cabin retreat she and Roy had purchased which they called "La Medicina Grande." In the decades of summers that she spent there, Edith became a fixture in the community of South Fork where she was as apt to be known by Grandy as she was Edith. During these summers she would often work in the kitchen at Fun Valley, a summer camp for vacationers, where she met many in the community as well as travelers staying at the camp. In all cases she touched the lives of those who were blessed to know her. Edith was recognized in 1993 by the State of Oklahoma as a daughter of a Civil War Union soldier, Jeremiah Smith. Edith had been a widow since 1971, when she lost the love of her life, Roy D. Boatright, also known as Grampy. During these 40 years she never stopped missing him and often spoke of him and the many things they did together. Edith has now joined Roy and they will continue their adventures. For us on this earthly plain, our memories of her will always be of a vibrant, tough and good hearted woman who never shrank from a challenge and always put her family first and looked for the good in everyone. Edith leaves behind a son, Don Boatright Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Lago Vista; granddaughter, Melissa L. Boatright and her husband, Steve, of Round Rock; grandson, Lee "Trey" Miks and wife, Debbie, also of Round Rock; granddaughter, Julie Philpot and her husband, Frank Allen, of Centreville, Va., and six great-grandchildren. Edith was predeceased by her parents; five brothers; two sisters; husband, Roy D. Boatright; daughter, Martha Ellen Huffman; grandson, Matthew Balles; and granddaughters, Karen and Lesa Miks.
