Cook Brown
May 21, 1933 – March 11, 2025
June passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 in Lubbock, Texas. A graveside service will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park, Texas Tech Mausoleum, 5740 19th St., Lubbock, TX 79407, on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at 10:00 AM.
She was born 5-21-1933 in Paris, Texas and grew up in Big Spring, Texas.
She was preceded in death by: Father Manley Abston Cook, Mother Mary Avenelle Cook, Brother Clifton Lee (Pete) Cook, Sister Mary Nell (Lennelle) Shaffer. Survived by: four children: J.R. Brown and wife Lorie, Catherine Brown, Chris Brown and wife Julie and Peter Brown and wife Kim. Six Grandchildren and seven Great Grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great greats!
She was a South Plains Maid of Cotton Contestant in 1953. Graduated from Texas Tech in 1954 with a degree in Business. June was a member of Ko Shari Social Club which transitioned to Pi Beta Phi when Texas Tech went to the Greek System. She returned to Big Spring to work for Cosden Oil refinery. June married her college sweetheart in 1954 and followed her husband John through flight schools in Pensacola, FL and Kingsville, TX before landing in Oceana, VA raising her children during John's many deployments. She would return to Texas supporting her family during John's six plus years of pre-dental, dental school and residency. She was instrumental in assisting the management of John's orthodontic practice for many years. June immersed herself in volunteer work, her children's multiple sports and their activities. She volunteered at the hospital, countless weekend tennis tournaments driving the players. June volunteered with the Girl and Boy Scout troops to drive the scouts to their various overnight and week-long camps. Including a harrowing Explorers canoe trip in Big Bend. Someone opened the flood gates after they began their canoe trip! When her brood returned from hunting with quail or dove, they would dress them out and she would prepare a feast. Family road trips were always an adventure whether it was leaving the gas station with one less child than she arrived with, or watching her oldest boy scout find a pair of pliers in the car to wire snow chains together to complete their journey to the mountains. June's business degree and volunteerism would rub off onto her children as they too followed her path earning multiple degrees and professional certifications, while supporting multiple charitable organizations. She played tennis, golf, snow skied, water skied, loved crossword puzzles and was a competitive bridge and mahjong player/opponent.
June had a world map with all of her travel destinations noted on it, including Russia, Australia and China. She also traveled all over the US with her sister Mary Nell and her brother-in-law Jimmy Shaffer in their motor home.
Most of all June was a gentle soul with a large and giving heart. She will be sorely missed.
