Obituary

Funeral services for Dr. Alex B. Crowder, Jr., 88 of Roaring Springs, formerly of Lubbock will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Roaring Springs with Mike Crowley officiating and Bill Manne assisting. Burial will follow in Roaring Springs Cemetery under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home of Plainview, Texas. He was born June 18, 1926 in Abilene, Texas to Alex B. and Jewell Odessa (Airhart) Crowder, Sr. He attended public school in Sweetwater, graduating in 1943. He earned the Eagle Scout Badge. Went to A & M for two semesters. He was drafted October 19, 1944 and served in 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper in the Philippines and Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Linnie "Jo" Jennings on July 30, 1948 in Sweetwater. He graduated from HSU with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1950 and Masters Degree in 1951. He coached high school athletics for 12 years and in 1960 became principal. He attended Doctoral Program at North Texas State University and received his Doctorate of Education in August 1965. Dr. Crowder taught 35 years at Texas Tech and helped develop an off campus field based program for undergrad students, and a nationally renowned recruitment program that began with 6th graders and continued with them through high school. He was recognized twice by Mortar Board, an honor student program at Texas Tech as one of 5 best teachers. He was charter member of Coke Spillers Club and served on Roaring Springs City Council and director of "Kids Camp." He organized and developed an all day 4th of July celebrations in Roaring Springs. He was a member of Lions Club and coordinated the mobile food pantry program. He helped Roaring Springs fire department get a badly needed new fire truck. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Jo Crowder of Roaring Springs; 1 son, Alex B. "Buddy" Crowder of Roaring Springs; 2 daughters, LaVinda Susan Crowder Vanaria of Connecticut and DeNisa Brown and husband Curtis of Dalhart; 1 sister, Emma Jeanne Butler of Amarillo; sisters-in-law, Lee Cook, Genetta Ameijide and Judy Vaughn; 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Roaring Springs Fire Department, City of Roaring Springs, P.O.
